Episode 12

CHARMAINE just got off the phone with MONA FERGUSON and is suspicious of MONA as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

(CHARMAINE and MONA hang up. CHARMAINE dials again.)

LINDA - Hello?

CHARMAINE - Hi Linda it's Charmaine. We met at Mona Ferguson's house.

LINDA - Oh yeah! Hi!

CHARMAINE - Linda, let me ask you a question.

LINDA - Sure.

CHARMAINE - What do you think about Mona?

LINDA - She seems real cool. I'm glad she decided to have that meeting, I really want to be an AKA so I was drawing in on everything she said. Why do you ask?

CHARMAINE - Well...it's kinda weird.

LINDA - What's that?

(CHARMAINE pauses.)

CHARMAINE - She just called me and had me run down her founders...as if she didn't know them. Like, she was clearly writing them down or something. Something tells me that Mona Ferguson isn't all she presented herself to be and before I go any further, I plan to find out!

LINDA - Wait wait, let me get this straight.

CHARMAINE - Uh huh.

LINDA - Mona Ferguson, the AKA, called you and didn't know her own founders?

CHARMAINE - Seemed like it.

LINDA - She couldn't recite her own founders?

CHARMAINE - She didn't recite them, I did.

LINDA - Well how do you know that she didn't know them herself?

CHARMAINE - Because of the tone of the conversation. I'm tellin' you, she didn't know them. When I finished, she didn't even know that I was done! She thought I was supposed to keep going or something!

(silence)

CHARMAINE - What?

LINDA - I don't know Charmaine. It just sounds risky to me. I mean, I don't know if I would question a member of the sorority.

CHARMAINE - Well answer this, why weren't there any other chapter members at the interest meeting?

LINDA - I don't know but her mother was there so it had to be official.

(silence)

LINDA - I don't know. I just don't want to get into any trouble that would jeopardize our chances at becoming AKAs. Ya know?

CHARMAINE - Yeah. It just doesn't sit right with me though.

LINDA - Well what are you gonna do?

(CHARMAINE thinks.)

CHARMAINE - I just don't trust this situation and I'm gonna find out about Mona!

LINDA - I don't think you should do that. I think you're making a big mistake.

CHARMAINE - I think it would be a big mistake if I don't research her and find out.

LINDA - Wait Charmaine, let's just think about what you're saying. You are about to go and check up on the background of one of the AKAs here at Ahpla University? How crazy is that when you want to be one? Let's not be hasty here.

CHARMAINE - Linda I'm tellin' you. Something doesn't add up here. It doesn't feel right in my gut and I always go with my gut feelings. My intuition never steers me wrong.

LINDA - I don't think this is woman's intuition. I think this is borderline crazy. Please Charmaine...don't do this!

BOBBY is in his room working on a paper.

BOBBY thinks - Why in the world do I always get sleepy everytime I try and do some work? Damn.

(BOBBY stands up and walks around his room trying to wake himself up.)

BOBBY thinks - I think it's this computer screen. It just hypnotizes me! Ha ha ha.

(He does a few jumping jacks and feels more alert. BOBBY then sits back down and starts to type his paper.)

BOBBY thinks - Okay, now I'm good to go. Now where was I? Oh yeah, I jusssss...

(BOBBY dozes off.)

BOBBY thinks - Huh? Damn, this is ridiculous!

(BOBBY saves his work to a disc and grabs his books and his bag.)

BOBBY thinks - I need a change of environment. Something that will keep me more alert so I can write.

(He grabs his keys and is out the door.)

BOBBY thinks - I should've thought of this in the first place. Where better to study than in the library? There computer is faster than mine anyway.

(BOBBY sees the shuttle bus to campus right outside his door so he runs to catch it.)

BOBBY thinks - Wow, glad I caught the bus! I would've had to wait at least another thirty minu...damn she is fine!

(BOBBY notices a girl sitting on the bus.)

BOBBY thinks - I need to chill, but damn! She know she fine too!

(BOBBY smiles to himself as he passes the girl and sits down.)

BOBBY thinks - I definitely ain't sleepy now after running for the bus and then seeing her fine ass! Ha ha ha ha!

(The bus pulls up to campus and BOBBY gets off and walks to the library.)

BOBBY thinks - I hope it isn't crowded up in here. Hope there are computers available.

(As BOBBY gets to the door of the library, there is another young lady walking in with him. He holds the door for her.)

BOBBY thinks - Damn! Ahpla got some fine ass women! Damn!

GIRL - Thank you.

BOBBY - My pleasure.

(BOBBY smiles big as the girl walks through the door.)

BOBBY - Have a nice day.

GIRL - You too.

(The girl smiles back at BOBBY and walks away.)

BOBBY thinks - Damn, I still got it. Ha ha ha ha! She was hot to death!

(BOBBY walks to the computer lab and finds an empty computer. He sits down, takes out his books and signs on.)

BOBBY thinks - This was a smart move. I won't get sleepy here...not with all these fine women to look at!

(As soon as BOBBY pulls out his disc, a girl sits at the computer next to him and begins to log on. BOBBY turns to look at her.)

BOBBY thinks - Oh my God!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LINDA is trying to talk CHARMAINE out of the idea of checking up on MONA FERGUSON.

CHARMAINE - This is something I have to do Linda. Something isn't right with this whole thing and I can't go any further not knowing. I'll call you back when I find something out.

LINDA - Charmaine wait!

CHARMAINE - I'll call you back I promise.

LINDA - But...

CHARMAINE - I'll call you back.

(click)

LINDA - Charmaine!

LINDA thinks - God!

(LINDA hangs up.)

LINDA thinks - Okay, this is bad. Real bad!

(LINDA looks at her watch.)

LINDA thinks - What am I gonna do?

(LINDA grabs her keys and runs out the door.)

LINDA - She is making a huge mistake! I just know it!

(LINDA runs to the elevator and goes down to the lobby.)

LINDA thinks - I want to be an AKA so bad...I just can't afford for Charmaine to mess that up for all of us! She may try to find out what's up with Mona and mess us all up! Bump that!

(LINDA waits at the shuttle bus stop, outside of her dorm.)

LINDA thinks - Maybe Mona was trying to test Charmaine by asking about the founders. That's something I would do. There's nothing suspicious about that.

(The bus comes and LINDA gets on.)

LINDA thinks - What if this is just one big test to see how Charmaine and all of us will react. She is about to mess us all up!

(LINDA gets off at the very first stop and enters the dorm.)

LINDA thinks - I hope she's here!

(LINDA goes upstairs and knocks on the door.)

LINDA thinks - Please be here! Please be here!

(The door opens.)

LINDA - Hi, I'm so glad you're here. I really need to talk to you.

MONA - Sure, come on in!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ladies of Delta Sigma Theta sorority are together with their pledgee BREANNA. The other pledgee THERESA still has not shown up.

(WILLIE whispers to ROBIN.)

WILLIE whispers - You know, I'm starting to get worried Robin. Maybe something happened to Theresa.

ROBIN whispers - Something is going to happen to her ass when she walks through that door!

WILLIE thinks - Good Lord!

(There is a knock on the door.)

CHRISTIAN - This better be that other Pyramid!

PYRAMID BREANNA thinks - It has to be her! Please!

(ROBIN opens the door.)

DRE - What's the deal sawrahs! Roof Roof!

ROBIN - Hey!

TY - Roof! Roof! Who's that knockin' on the door!

ROBIN - Hey yall, the bruhs are here! Come in guys!

(DRE and TY come in. ROBIN looks down the hall for THERESA but doesn't see her.)

CHRISTIAN - Pyramid you need to greet the brothers of Omega Psi Phi. I didn't get a chance to teach it to you because your line sister isn't here so make something up and don't embarass me.

PYRAMID BREANNA - I won't embarass you big sister!

CHRISTIAN - Hey Dre. What's up Ty. Come over here and get your greeting.

DRE - Oh word? Well let's hear it.

CHRISTIAN - Go ahead Pyramid.

PYRAMID BREANNA - Uh...greetings brothers of Omega Psi Phi!

(silence)

PYRAMID BREANNA - Fraternity...incorporated!

(silence)

DRE - Awww man! That's it!

TY - Ha ha ha ha! That's the best yall got? Ha ha ha!

CHRISTIAN - Didn't I say not to embarass me! I should...

(There is a loud pounding on the door.)

WILLIE - Who the heck is trying to break the door down?

TY - Must be some more Ques! Maybe Ronnie.

(WILLIE opens the door and PYRAMID THERESA rushes in almost knocking her over.)

PYRAMID THERESA - Greetings big sisters your brains and beauty make all you see!

Fall to their knees!

Beg and plead!

From the college to the campus!

From the burbs to the hood!

Everything you do

is alllllllllllllllll good!

(PYRAMID THERESA snaps to attention. Everyone in the room is silent.)

WILLIE - Uh...

PYRAMID THERESA - Greetings to the brothers!

The oh so nasty big brothers!

Of Omega Psi Phi fraternity!

It is my pleasure!

To simply be in your presence!

The powerful men of purple!

The nasty Que dogs!

Greetings to you!

From Pyramid number two!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOBBY has gone to the computer lab to wake himself up and to complete his work. While sitting at the computer, a young lady sits at the computer next to him and he just notices her.

(As soon as BOBBY pulls out his disc, a girl sits at the computer next to him and begins to log on. BOBBY turns to look at her.)

BOBBY thinks - Oh my God!

BOBBY - Come here often?

JENNA - Excuse me?

BOBBY - I was just saying hello. Hi I'm Robert.

JENNA - I'm Jenna.

(They shake hands.)

BOBBY thinks - This is the finest girl I have ever seen in my life!

BOBBY - What ya workin' on?

JENNA - I have Dr. Mwatsumi for African American literature.

BOBBY thinks - Who?

BOBBY - I took him for African American lit last year.

JENNA - Oh you did? Does he seem like a strange teacher to you?

BOBBY thinks - Work it Bobby! Work it!

BOBBY - Strange? In what sense?

JENNA - Well last week he came in and looked like he had been up all night. Like he was visibly sleepy and his eyes were red. And he just seems out of it lately.

BOBBY - You know, it's just that he has such a strenous work ethic. I actually noticed that about him too when I took his class and I spoke to him about it. You know, out of genuine concern.

JENNA - Oh, that was nice of you.

BOBBY - Yeah, I didn't know if his health was an issue or anything. So anyway, when I went to his office, he told me that he just works so hard, he never really sleeps. He stays up and grades papers, he writes a lot of articles for different foundations, he does speaking engagements, and of course he teaches. He is really wrapped up in his work. Kinda like me.

JENNA - Wow.

BOBBY - What assignment are you working on for him?

JENNA - Um...

(JENNA digs into her bag and pulls some papers out.)

JENNA - The affect of the civil rights movement on prevalent African American writers during the Harlem Renaissance.

BOBBY - Are you serious? Well this is your lucky day Jenna!

JENNA - How? What do you mean?

BOBBY - I did that paper already. Last year.

JENNA - You did?

BOBBY - Yep, I didn't know that Dr. Mwatsumi gave the exact same assignments year to year. If I had known that, I would've asked one of my frat brothers for his copy of it! Ha ha ha ha!

JENNA - Oh you're in a fraternity? Which one?

BOBBY - Guess.

(JENNA looks BOBBY up and down.)

JENNA - Kappa.

(silence)

BOBBY - You just lost the rights to get my copy of the paper I did last year.

(BOBBY playfully turns his back to JENNA and begins to type his paper.)

JENNA - No no! Hee hee, give me another chance!

BOBBY - Okay, but don't guess wrong again!

JENNA - Um...Alpha?

BOBBY - Yep. I'm president of the chapter.

JENNA - You are? Oh cool!

BOBBY - When is your assignment due?

JENNA - Not until Monday. So I have a few days.

BOBBY - Good because I obviously don't have it with me, it is on my computer at home.

JENNA - This is so awesome! I didn't know where I was gonna begin to do this paper! I am so glad we met Robert.

BOBBY thinks - Oh you have no idea how glad I am!

BOBBY - No doubt! I was actually just finishing up here, I just need to get my disc out. If you want to come over to the dorm, I can see if I can find that paper on my computer somewhere.

JENNA - Would you? Oh gosh that would be great!

BOBBY - Okay hold on, let me grab my disc.

(BOBBY takes out the disc that he had just put in.)

BOBBY - Okay, I think I have done enough work here for one night. You ready?

JENNA - Yes sir! Sure am!

BOBBY - Okay then.

JENNA - I really really appreciate this Robert. You are really going out of your way for me and you don't even know me.

BOBBY - Well I try to be a nice guy and you seem like a nice young lady. I'm just tryin' to help.

(JENNA smiles as they begin to walk.)

BOBBY - And please...call me Bobby. My close friends call me Bobby.

JENNA - Alright Bobby.

(JENNA begins to blush.)

JENNA - Well thank you again.

BOBBY - Don't thank me yet. I have to find that assignment on my computer. It was a year ago that I wrote it.

JENNA - Oh that's true.

BOBBY - But in case I don't find it, I remember where I got the information from. So in the worst case scenario, I can sit with you and help you put the paper back together if I have to.

JENNA - Oh that would be so nice of you.

(BOBBY smiles.)

BOBBY - No problem.

(They walk out of the library.)

BOBBY - Hey Jenna, I'm starvin'. How bout we stop and get something to eat on the way to my place?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MONA - What brings you by...uh...uh.

LINDA - Linda.

MONA - Oh right, Linda. Have a seat Linda, can I get you anything?

LINDA - Oh no, I am fine...thanks.

(LINDA sits down, MONA sits next to her.)

MONA - Well what can I do for you?

LINDA - I'm not sure about something, and I needed to ask your advice about it. Between me and you.

MONA - Of course. What is it?

LINDA - If one of your line sisters...was about to make a big mistake...but she told you something in confidence...I mean, should you say something and try to help her? To help the group?

MONA - Of course. If it's for the good of the group. Then it would be my duty as a sister and as a sorority member to say something. I certainly would.

(silence)

MONA - Linda what is it?

(silence)

MONA - What is troubling you?

LINDA - Well...

(LINDA pauses.)

LINDA - ...Charmaine called me and told me that you were on the phone with her and asked her about the founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority incorporated.

MONA - Yeah...uh huh.

LINDA - So she said that it sounded like you didn't know the founders yourself and that made her really suspicious of you.

MONA - Oh really?

(MONA smiles.)

LINDA - Yeah, so now she wants to research you and check you out. Make sure you are legit before she goes any further.

MONA - Is that so?

LINDA - I hope I didn't get her in trouble. I know we aren't line sisters, but I thought it may hurt the group of us interested if she were to cross a sorority member the wrong way.

MONA - Oh no. I'm glad you came to me. Let me tell you the deal, then maybe you will understand.

LINDA - Okay.

MONA - You see, when we were on line pledging AKA last year, we had some problems with our pledge process.

LINDA - Oh yeah?

MONA - Yeah. I can't go into all the details with you obviously.

LINDA - I understand.

MONA - But just know that out of the four ladies on my line, I am the only one that is active in the sorority and in the chapter. That is why we had to have the meeting in my room and that is why none of them were here.

LINDA - Wow! Really?

MONA - They don't love Alpha Kappa Alpha the way that I do.

LINDA - They don't?

MONA - No, but that's another story. The point that I'm tryin' to make is this. There are always people who try and go through the pledge process that shouldn't. Some actually make it in, as is the case with my line sisters. And some are just trouble makers from the start.

LINDA - Yeah, I see what you mean.

MONA - So I am glad that you told me this about Charmaine.

(MONA smiles.)

MONA - Yeah, I'll take care of Charmaine.

LINDA - Okay.

MONA - But in the meantime Linda...

(LINDA pays close attention.)

MONA - ...you stick with me. You do everything I say. You don't trust anything from the mouths of June, Katrice, or PJ. And I gurantee you, you will be an AKA sooner than you think!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(The entire room is silent.)

CHRISTIAN - That's what I'm talkin' about! That's how the hell you greet somebody! Yeah baby!

(CHRISTIAN runs up and hugs PYRAMID THERESA. WILLIE looks surprised, so does ROBIN.)

TY - I see at least one of the pledgees is tight! Ha ha ha ha ha!

WILLIE thinks - How the heck did she...

CHRISTIAN - Go over there with your line sister! You better work girl!

(PYRAMID THERESA runs over to line up next to PYRAMID BREANNA who also looks surprised.)

CHRISTIAN - That was tight! You got me all pumped up now!

DRE - Yeah! Me too! Roof! Roof! Roof!

TY - Roof! Roof! Grrrrrrr!

(ROBIN approaches the line.)

ROBIN - Don't think because you impressed us with a little greeting that you're off the hook Theresa! I'm still pissed off at you for showing up so late!

PYRAMID THERESA thinks - Whatever.

(ROBIN walks away and TY approaches the line.)

TY whispers - Yall be strong! I'm only here to help you all. You're gonna be my sands so I ain't tryin' to haze yall, so whatever you need...

(TY slips THERESA a piece of paper.)

TY whispers - ...just give me a call.

CHRISTIAN - Okay ladies, it's time for yall to learn somethin'. Play time is over.

DRE - Awwwwwwww shit! Time to see how much yall know! Ha ha!

CHRISTIAN - Take out your pledge books and let's begin.

PYRAMID THERESA thinks - Oh shoot! My pledge book! Mona has it!

(PYRAMID BREANNA pulls out her pledge book.)

CHRISTIAN - Okay, turn to the second page and...Pyramid Theresa, where is your pledge book?

PYRAMID THERESA - Uh...uh...

(PYRAMID THERESA starts to sway back and forth.)

PYRAMID THERESA - Big Sister DSTeazy off the Heazy fo Sheazy My Neazy...I feel sick!

CHRISTIAN - You what?

PYRAMID THERESA - I think...I think...I'm gonna throw up...

ROBIN thinks - Oh please!

PYRAMID THERESA - I need to...run...to the...

(PYRAMID THERESA runs to the bathroom.)

CHRISTIAN - What are you gonna do just stand there? Go help your line sister!

PYRAMID BREANNA - Yes Big Sister DSTeazy off the Heazy fo Sheazy My Neazy!

(BREANNA runs to the bathroom behind THERESA.)

PYRAMID BREANNA thinks - Oh God, I hope Theresa is okay!

(BREANNA opens the door and sees THERESA sitting on the sink filing her nails.)

PYRAMID BREANNA - What are you doing!

PYRAMID THERESA - Filing my nails.

PYRAMID BREANNA - Filing your...

(BREANNA looks over her shoulder to make sure the bathroom door is closed.)

PYRAMID BREANNA whispers - ...filing your nails! Are you crazy! Why did you tell the big sisters that you're sick?

PYRAMID THERESA - Stick with me kid, you'll learn a lot. We are gonna breeze through this pledge process because you can't let them get to you.

PYRAMID BREANNA - Oh my God what are you talkin' about!

PYRAMID THERESA - Perfect example...I came in late. Christian must've been mad. I rattled off a stupid greeting off the top of my head and she forgot all about how mad she was. I manipulated her instead of her manipulatin' me. Understand?

PYRAMID BREANNA - I understand that you're crazy!

PYRAMID THERESA - Another example, they want my pledge book. I left it somewhere. But instead of gettin' in trouble I act like I'm sick. Ha ha ha ha! I plan to do this the entire pledge process! Just keep gettin' over until we cross. No sweat!

PYRAMID BREANNA - I take this serious! We all do...everyone does! What's wrong with you! I'm sincere in wanting Delta Sigma Theta.

PYRAMID THERESA - Hey girl, suit yourself...I don't plan to let any of this phase me at all.

(THERESA checks herself in the mirror and looks at her nails one more time. Then gets off the sink to leave the bathroom.)

PYRAMID THERESA - Like I said Bree...watch how I handle this pledge situation. Don't take anything too serious. Never let em phase you girl, never get phased.

(The Pyramids leave the bathroom.)

PYRAMID THERESA thinks - Never let em see me swe...

(THERESA stops short. She notices that along with the Ques, the Alphas are there as well and WILLIE is sitting on JASON's lap.)
